The Small Group Session Kit — Season One cover
Season One · thirteen sessions through the Gospel of Mark
tuesday, 9:14pm

The group meets tomorrow. You know the feeling.

The workbook questions fell flat last week — twelve of them, read aloud to a quiet room. The prep you meant to do on Sunday is still sitting there. And somewhere under the tiredness there's the thought you'd never say in church: maybe I'm just not good at this.

You're not the problem. Nobody handed you a plan — they handed you a room. Volunteer leaders quit over exactly this: not the people, the prep. Every week, from scratch, forever.

Season One ends the from-scratch part.

what a session gives you

One night, six parts — engineered, not improvised.

Every session runs the same rhythm. By week three your group knows it, and the rhythm starts doing the work for you.

  1. 7:00Open

Two connection questions — one lighter, one deeper. You read the room and pick. This is half the reason people come back.

  2. 7:15Read

The passage, out loud, from whatever Bible your group already uses. Each session tells you what to listen for.

  3. 7:20Observe

Easy questions about what's on the page. Easy is deliberate: it buys you honest answers later.

  4. 7:35The tension ⚑

The one question the night turns on — where the passage touches something real. Marked in every session.

  5. 7:55Land it

From the text to Tuesday: one application question, one small practice for the week. Small enough that people actually do it.

  6. 8:10Close

A prayer prompt and the One Thing round — one sentence each, around the circle. Hard to hide in, gently.

Eighty minutes with margin for life. Running an hour? Every session includes the 60-minute cut.

what's inside

Thirteen nights, one Gospel.

Mark is the shortest gospel and the fastest — action after action, almost no speeches. It hands your group fear, doubt, money, failure, and rest, and it never lets things get theoretical.

  • wk 01Mark 1Being asked to follow before you feel ready
  • wk 02Mark 2The friends who do the carrying
  • wk 03Mark 4Why the same words land differently in different lives
  • wk 04Mark 4Fear, and who's actually in the boat
  • wk 05Mark 5Interruptions, waiting, and being seen
  • wk 06Mark 6Rest, limits, and enough
  • wk 07Mark 7Clean hands, far hearts
  • wk 08Mark 8The question Jesus asks everyone
  • wk 09Mark 9“I believe; help my unbelief”
  • wk 10Mark 10Money, and the one thing we won't put down
  • wk 11Mark 10Ambition, greatness, and towels
  • wk 12Mark 14Peter's failure — and ours
  • wk 13Mark 15–16The cross, the empty tomb, and what now

the part no workbook gives you

For when the room goes sideways.

Questions are the easy half. The hard half is 8:37pm, when you've asked something honest and nobody breathes. The Kit gives you six rescue moves — not theory, the actual words. Three of them:

The silence

“Someone read the verse again for us — which word stands out?”

Count to seven first. Silence feels three times longer to the leader than to the room — and re-anchoring in the text restarts any stalled conversation.

The dominator

“Let's hear from someone who hasn't gone yet.”

Structural, not personal — said warmly, it works without shaming anyone. The kit includes the private follow-up that converts a dominator into an ally.

The one-word answers

“Say more?”

The room isn't shy; the question was closed. Two words reopen it — and asking for stories instead of opinions keeps it open.

All six are in the kit — plus the session-by-session notes for the nights that get heavy: the grief that surfaces in week 5, the burnout confession in week 6, the doubt in week 9.

Is this your group?

Season One is built for you if —

  • You lead (or just agreed to lead) a small group, home Bible study, or Sunday class
  • Your church hands you a room, not a plan
  • Your prep happens late, after work, and it's wearing you down
  • Your discussions live or die on the quality of the questions
  • Your group is anywhere from four people to fifteen

It's probably not for you if —

  • Your church already supplies weekly leader material you're required to use
  • You're looking for an academic commentary — this prepares discussion, not lectures
  • You want video-driven sessions rather than conversation-driven ones

The flat-night guarantee

Run your first two sessions. If your group's conversation isn't noticeably different, reply to your receipt email within 30 days and you get every dollar back — no forms, no hard feelings. You'll keep the kit either way; we can't un-send a PDF.

questions leaders ask

Before you ask —

Which Bible translation does it use?

Yours. Sessions reference the passage (say, Mark 4:35–41) and your group reads it from whatever Bibles are already in the room — NIV, ESV, CSB, KJV, NLT, all fine. Where the kit quotes a phrase, it uses the public-domain World English Bible.

Is it tied to a denomination?

No. Sessions are passage-anchored and broadly evangelical, and they deliberately stay out of denominational arguments. Where traditions genuinely differ, the leader brief flags it and defers to your church's teaching — always.

I've never led before. Is this too advanced?

It's aimed at you. Session one is deliberately built as a first night — for the group and for you. Add the ten-minute prep flow and the rescue moves, and you'll walk in more prepared than most leaders with years behind them.

How do I get it, and can I print it?

Instant download by email after checkout — a PDF that reads well on a phone and prints clean on a home printer. Your license covers printing and copying session pages for your own group, every week.

What if my group meets for only an hour?

Every session includes the 60-minute cut: one opener, one observe question, the tension kept whole. The tension question is never cut — it's the reason the night exists.

What if it doesn't work for my group?

Run two sessions. If the conversation isn't noticeably different, reply to your receipt within 30 days for a full refund. No forms.

Who makes this?

Small Group Operator — the maker of The Small Group Operator's Manual, the facilitation playbook already in the hands of over 150 U.S. group leaders. The Manual teaches the skill of leading; the Session Kit is the material you lead with. They work alone or together.
